HORTICULTURE DEPARTMENT

District Bandipora has been carved out from District Baramulla, situated on the banks of Asia’s Largest Fresh Water Lake “The Wullar”. Bandipora is famous for 3-A’s i.e Alim (Knowledge), Adab (Good Habits or Literature) and Aab (Water). About 70% to 80% population is directly or indirectly involved in Horticulture and 49% of the working population is engaged in Horticulture. Horticulture provide employment to other related trades such as fertilizer, pesticide, agriculture machinery, traders and processing unit holders resulting in the generation of higher incomes in rural areas, thereby improving the life style of the farmers.

Functions of the Department

Development of Horticulture, Implementation of CSC Schemes as well as CAPEX/HADP schemes such as MIDH, RKVY,SMAM,ATMA, PDMC, HADP, JKCIP, CAPEX in field, besides providing of technical knowhow and awareness regarding new technologies for th promotion of horticulture in the district. Horticulture also establishes High Density orchards and other Food processing units which will not only generate employment, also act as income generation units.

Exhibitions

Horticulture exhibition is a trade show for the horticulture industry, showcasing products and technologies related to growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other plants. These events provide platforms for businesses to network, display innovations in areas like greenhouse technology and irrigation systems, and explore new market opportunities.

Horticulture Mechanization & Automation

➤Promote Holistic growth of Horticulture Sector, which includes research, technology promotion, extension, post harvest management, processing and marketing, in consonance with comparative advantage of District and its adverse agro climatic features.

➤Encourage aggregation of farmers into famers groups like FIGS, FPOs and FPCs to bring economy of scale and scope.

➤Enhance horticulture production, augment farmers, income and strengthen nutritional security.

➤Improve productivity by way of quality germ plasm, planting material and water use efficiency through Micro Irrigation.

➤Support skill development and creation employment generation opportunities for rural youth in Horticulture and post Harvest management ,especially in the cold chain sector.

Adopt an end to end holistic approach covering pre-production, post harvest management processing and marketing to assure appropriate returns to growers /producers.

Improve productivity by way of quality through:

1. Diversification, from traditional crops to plantations, orchards.

ii. Extension of appropriate technology to farmers for high-tech Horticulture including protected cultivation and precision farming.

III. Increase of acreage of orchards and plantation crops particularly where total area under Horticulture is less than 50% of agricultural area.
