SHEEP HUSBANDARY

Sheep Husbandry Department came into existence in the year 1962 & District Sheep Husbandry Office Bandipora was established in the month of April 2007. The Department is headed by District Sheep Husbandry Officer (DSHO) and comprises of three Sheep and Wool Development Offices (SDO) viz. Bandipora, Gurez and Hajin which further comprise of 11 Sheep Development Blocks viz Hajin, Sumbal, Ajas, Naidkhai, Aloosa, Mantrigam, Kunan, Gamroo, Bagtore, Baduaab and Budugam

Functions of the Department

  • To provide healthcare facilities to livestock(Sheep and Goat) of the District including vaccinations ,deworming, etc
  • To bridge the mutton deficit of the district
  • To increase wool production of the district
  • To provide self employment to unemployed youth of the district through various income generating schemes

02 Integrated Sheep Development Scheme (i)Establishment of 20-200 EWES/DOES unit : 50% of the unit cost as total eligible subsidy with a ceiling of Rs 1.06 lac per unit (20 Sheep/Goat)

(ii) Establishment of 10 EWE/DOE unit under Participatory Mode: 10 sheep/goats shall be provided to the beneficiary free of cost; and from 3rd year of establishment, department shall retrieve 2 ewes/does) from each breeder for next five years. (iii) Establishment of shearing unit under subsidy mode Integrated Sheep Development Scheme: Shearing Unit would mean a unit comprising of 01 Shearing Machine, Genset and Shearing spares required to undertake the activity. 50% of the unit cost will be provided as total eligible subsidy within a ceiling of Rs 0.75 Lac per unit whichever is less with total unit cost of 1.50 Lac.  Any individual trained in Machine Sheep Shearing or intending to undergo training in Machine Sheep Shearing.

03 Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana Establishment of 10 EWE/DOE unit under retrieval  Mode: 10 sheep/goats shall be provided to the beneficiary free of cost; and from 3rd year of establishment, department shall retrieve 2 ewes/does) from each breeder for next five years.
